We urge Nobel Laureates to protest against politicians' climate betrayal
This year's Nobel Prize ceremony coincides with the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) climate summit in Dubai. Representatives of the Swedish government, parliamentary parties and business, and representatives from several countries in the world are in Sweden celebrating scientific progress while science is ignored by the world's leaders in Dubai. We researchers from the international network Scientist Rebellion (SR) have therefore challenged the Nobel laureates to call for collective mobilization against the politicians' climate betrayal. Those who have the privilege to know also have the duty to act.
The science on the climate crisis is crystal clear. To reduce the risk of realizing the most catastrophic of the IPCC's scenarios, all of the world's countries need to come together. The 27 previous COP meetings have failed: global emissions are now over 60% higher than at the first meeting. The 28th meeting looks set to be an even bigger setback as negotiations are being led by Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO of the national oil company, who is using the meeting as a platform to secure oil deals. Scientists around the world are now raising their voices. Over 1000 of them have now signed a petition to mobilize resistance. In Sweden, 420 scientists have signed another petition to collectively demand change.
While the international climate transition effort has been hijacked by an elite that wants to prevent an actual transition to protect its economic interests, the Swedish government is pursuing a climate and environmental policy that will lead to increased emissions of up to 10 million tons in the near future. Sweden will therefore miss the already too low climate targets for 2030. In this situation, it becomes problematic to celebrate scientific successes without addressing how the accumulated science on the climate crisis and its consequences is ignored by the world's leaders. It is a scandal that these politicians celebrate scientific successes while ignoring climate and environmental research in their own decision-making.
For decades, politicians and policymakers have failed citizens. The crisis is escalating by the day and already millions of people are affected by extreme weather every year. How much worse will it have to get before more people react?
The Nobel Prize winners can lead the way. Not only do they have the privilege of knowing, they also have a platform from which to raise their voices. They should act in line with "having done the greatest good for humanity". We researchers from SR have therefore sent a letter to the laureates challenging them to clearly express during the Nobel ceremony the need for everyone to protest against the nonchalance of politicians. The situation is acute and the future of humanity will be determined by whether the climate crisis is handled as the crisis it is.
We will also recall the climate emergency by demonstrating together with other groups during the Nobel Prize ceremony. The Nobel Laureates should not allow themselves to be used as a distraction from politicians' climate deception.They must choose where they stand.It is not possible to be neutral about the existential threat posed by the climate crisis.

Årets Nobelprisceremoni sker samtidigt som det 28:e klimattoppmötet Conference of the parties (COP) i Dubai. Representanter för svenska regeringen, riksdagspartier och näringsliv, och representanter från flera av världens länder är i Sverige och firar vetenskapliga framsteg samtidigt som vetenskapen ignoreras av världens makthavare i Dubai. Vi forskare från det internationella nätverket Scientist Rebellion (SR) har därför utmanat nobelpristagarna att uppmana till kollektiv mobilisering mot politikernas klimatsvek. De som har förmånen att veta, har också plikten att agera.
Forskningsläget om klimatkrisen är glasklart. För att minska risken för att de mest katastrofala av IPCCs scenarion realiseras behöver alla världens länder gå samman. De 27 tidigare COP-mötena har misslyckats: världens utsläpp är nu över 60% högre än då det första mötet hölls. Det 28:e mötet tycks bli ett ännu större bakslag då förhandlingarna leds av Sultan Al Jaber, VDn för det nationella oljebolaget, som använder mötet som plattform för att säkra oljeaffärer. Forskare i hela världen höjer nu sina röster. Över 1000 av dessa har nu skrivit under ett upprop i syfte att mobilisera motstånd. I Sverige har 420 forskare skrivit under ytterligare ett upprop för att kollektivt kräva omställning.
Medan det internationella arbetet med klimatomställningen har kapats av en elit som vill förhindra en faktisk omställning för att skydda sina ekonomiska intressen, driver Sveriges regering en klimat- och miljöpolitik som leder till ökade utsläpp på upp till 10 miljoner ton i närtid. Sverige kommer därför att missa de redan för lågt satta klimatmålen till 2030. I detta läge blir det problematiskt att fira vetenskapliga framgångar utan att adressera hur den samlade vetenskapen om klimatkrisen och dess konsekvenser nonchaleras av världens makthavare. Det är en skandal att dessa politiker firar vetenskapliga framgångar samtidigt som de själva nonchalerar klimat- och miljöforskningen i sitt eget beslutsfattande.
I decennier har politiker och makthavare svikit medborgarna. Krisen eskalerar för varje dag som går och redan nu drabbas miljontals årligen av extremväder. Hur mycket värre ska det behöva bli innan fler reagerar?
Nobelpristagarna kan visa vägen. De har inte bara förmånen att veta, de har även en plattform att höja sina röster utifrån. De bör agera i linje med att “ha gjort mänskligheten den största nyttan". Vi forskare från SR har därför skickat ett brev till pristagarna där de utmanas att under Nobelceremonin tydligt uttrycka behovet av att alla protesterar mot politikernas nonchalans. Läget är akut och mänsklighetens framtid avgörs av huruvida klimatkrisen hanteras som den kris den är.
Vi kommer även att påminna om klimatnödläget genom att demonstrera tillsammans med andra grupper under Nobelprisutdelningen. Nobelpristagarna bör inte låta sig användas som distraktion från politikernas klimatsvek. De måste välja var de står. Det går inte att vara neutral i frågan om det existentiella hot som klimatkrisen utgör.
